1855-O $20 AU53 NGC. This date is a true rarity amount
1855-O<$20> AU53 NGC. This date is a true rarity among Type One Liberty double eagles, although it is not in the same class as the 1854-O and 1856-O issues. Although written a quarter century ago, David Akers' comments are still valid today: "This is one of my favorite double eagles. I think that it is one of the most unappreciated coins in the series and it is undeniably one of the rarest, especially in high grade. It is not quite as rare overall as the 1854-O and 1856-O but the difference in rarity is not as great as the price differential would imply. Furthermore, I feel the 1855-O is actually rarer than either the 1854-O or 1856-O in high grade and is one of the two or three rarest double eagles with respect to condition rarity." With a mintage of just 8,000 pieces, it is doubtful that even 100 survive today.
This example is similar quality to the finest Bass Collection example (he only had two) and the Dallas Bank specimen. Smooth surfaces exhibit rich green-gold color with orange toning highlights on the devices. The overall coloration almost perfectly matches the description of original color given by Winter and Crum. Light wear is present on the high points, consistent with the grade. The surfaces are remarkably clean and problem-free, and some reflective prooflike character remains visible close to the devices. Only four Mint State examples have been certified by NGC (none by PCGS) and these coins probably only represent one or two actual coins, if any at all.
From The Wyoming Collection.
