1855-O $20 AU50 PCGS. The 1855-O ranks fifth among the thirteen New Orleans Mint Double Eagles in terms of both overall and high grade rarity. Perhaps surprisingly for a branch mint gold coin with just 8,000 pieces originally produced, the 1855-O was long overlooked and underappreciated as a rarity. After David Akers published his work on Double Eagles in 1982, however, the popularity of the '55-O skyrocketed. Today, it is a well respected rarity that always commands undivided bidder attention at auction. The importance of the Ashland City Collection continues to dazzle this cataloger. There are multiple examples of several rare branch mint gold issues, among which is the 1855-O Liberty Double Eagle. The first is this AU50 PCGS representative. There are no areas of noticeable striking incompleteness, and only the very highest points of the design have been lost to a short stint in circulation. Rich olive-gold color envelops both sides and enhances the already impressive eye appeal. Scattered light and moderate abrasions are consistent with a circulated Southern gold coin, but these features do not prevent one from appreciating the flickers of original luster that still cling to some of the more protected areas. A reeding mark over and before the end of Liberty's bust is the only worthwhile pedigree marker. From the Ashland City Collection.
