1855 Large Flying Eagle cent. J-169. P-194. S-PT1d. R-8. PR60 PCGS, OGH. Typical Proof (10: 3,3,4). Oroide (copper-tin alloy). Four Leaves under the E in STATES.
This is a very rare alloy as attributed on the PCGS holder. This issue was struck in many alloys of copper nickel – 40% , 20% , 12% and 10% as well as in pure copper and bronze. Examples described to be Oroide, as the present piece is attributed should have no nickel and be mostly copper and slightly more tin than a bronze striking. It should have a yellow hue. The present example could be as attributed, as there is a golden hue to the surfaces. As such it is certainly a rare piece, close to unique.
The surfaces have medium mirrors and are from the die stage B/B described in Snow. There is a small spot in the denticles on the obverse at 7:00 and another in the right field – both are appropriate for the grade.
