1855 G$1 MS66 PCGS. The Type Two gold dollars are well
1855 G$1 MS66 PCGS. Both the 1854 and 1855 Type Two gold dollars were minted to the extent of a tad more than three-quarters of a million pieces each, and yet both are quite elusive in the higher Mint State grades. Their scarcity is largely due to the inappropriate design placement, putting the highpoints of each side in opposition. Type Two dollars are in demand chiefly from type collectors who desire to complete a U.S. type set, or a gold type set. Statistically, from the current combined NGC/PCGS population data, the 1855 shows a few more certified survivors in MS66 and finer grades than the 1854. Those services combined have certified 25 pieces of the 1855 in MS66, with seven pieces finer, while they have graded 17 examples of the 1854 in MS66, with five coins finer (11/06).
From any technical or aesthetic point of view, this is a lovely and appealing coin, one that is instantly appealing. First Foremost, one must mention the lustrous and radiant surfaces, which are delightfully patinated in hues of orange-gold and green-gold, with glints of lilac and apricot predominating on the reverse. While the clash marks that are ubiquitous in the Type Two gold dollars are present here (and they do not affect the grade anyway), the surfaces are stunningly pristine and unencumbered by obvious signs of contact, large or small. The almost universal strike weakness of this type is here limited to trifling softness on Liberty's highpoint hair and the 8 in the date and LL in the denomination. Nonetheless a stunning and delightful example of this rare type. Population: 14 in 66, 3 finer (11/06).
From The James Paul Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
