1855 G$1 MS65 PCGS. The gold dollar, first struck in 1
1855 G$1 MS65 PCGS. The gold dollar, first struck in 1849, was Mint Director James Ross Snowden's first attempt to unify the designs on 19th century American coins. Eventually this basic design type was extended to the three dollar gold piece, double eagle, Indian cent, three cent nickel, and a number of pattern five cents and pattern eagles from 1868. As Breen points out, while the design has commonly been referred to as an "Indian Princess head" it actually "did not represent any Native American; it was another of Longacre's numerous copies of the Venus Accroupie, or 'Crouching Venus,' a Roman marble in one of the Philadelphia museums."
The primary point of visual interest for this coin is its luster. It has magnificent, radiant, frosted mint luster that swirls around each side. The surfaces are virtually perfect, the only ripple in the fabric of the coin being the usually seen die clash marks. Better struck than usual, especially on the obverse, only slight weakness is noted on LL in DOLLAR and the 8 in the date. A rare opportunity to acquire this short-lived type in flashy Gem condition. Population: 34 in 65, 16 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
