1855 G$1 MS65 NGC. Type Two Gold Dollars were struck f 1855[G$1] MS65 NGC.
1855<G$1> MS65 NGC. Type Two Gold Dollars were struck for only three years, and although this duration exceeds the two years of the No Motto Saint-Gaudens Eagle and Double Eagle, the latter types were saved by the thousands in Mint State. This was not the case for the Type Two Gold Dollar, the rarest gold type if early gold is excluded. The numismatic significance of the type was not realized until many years after the small Liberty Head was replaced with the larger Princess Head, which bore great similarity to the portrait on the contemporary Three Dollar piece. The problem with the Type Two design was the relatively high relief of the portrait, which caused bold clash marks and striking softness on the center of the date and denomination. Those characteristics are present on this lustrous Gem, but are easily forgiven due to the clean surfaces and attractive light gold color. The strike is uncommonly sharp on the portrait of Liberty, and the wreath and peripheral legends are also bold.
From The Maegen and Bo Collection.
