1855 G$1 MS64 PCGS. The Type II gold dollar was doomed to be a short-lived type. The design did not allow all of the reverse details to strike up properly, and the design also proved prone to die clashing. Clash marks are noticeable on the near-Gem example offered here, being most obvious on the obverse just behind Liberty's head. The piece is lustrous and boldly struck, with just a touch of the typical softness on LL in DOLLAR and 18 in the date. Surface blemishes are minimal, as lime-gold and orange colors merge together pleasingly on both sides. An attractive example of this brief type for the grade.

Coin Engraver: James B.
