1855 G$1 MS64 PCGS. The 1855 dollar, with a mintage of 758,269 pieces, is one of the more available of the Type Two issues. It is comparable in mintage, and very close in rarity, to the 1854 Type Two. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, in the 2006 Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933, write that: "As population reports and auction records indicate, the 1855 is the slightly more rare of the two." The 1855 is often softly struck, especially in the central portions of the reverse, and extensive die clashing is not unusual.
The near-Gem presented in this sale displays satiny luster and peach-gold patination imbued with subtle traces of light green. The strike is somewhat better than average, though a touch of softness is noted at the top of the 8 in the date and on the bottom of the first L in DOLLAR. Nice definition is seen in the Indian's bonnet and on the reverse wreath. Well preserved surfaces reveal moderate clash marks on both sides and a couple of spindly die cracks on the reverse.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
