1855<G$1> MS64 PCGS. Breen-6039. Closed 5s. The considerable mintage of more than three-quarters of a million pieces from 21 obverse and 28 reverse dies, according to Breen, resulted in many "minor varieties" on this issue. Of course, collectors of this series know that Type Two gold dollars are notorious both for weak strikes and clash marks, often heavy ones. This coin is refreshingly and surprisingly free of visible clashing or heavy post-striking contact. The strike is pleasingly well executed, with slight weakness only on LL in DOLLAR and the 8 in the date below. On the obverse, the headdress is bold all the way to the top, with slight softness on the hair just below LIBERTY. The planchet is smooth, and the color is a luscious apricot-gold.
