1855<G$1> MS64 PCGS. Boldly struck in most areas, with rich satiny luster and luxuriant mint frost under a coating of reddish-orange patina. Die clashing, a diagnostic feature of the type, is clearly evident on each side. Both the design and the production of the Type Two Gold Dollar suggest great haste on the part of the U.S. Mint. For the former, James Longacre simply adapted the obverse of his Three Dollar gold design and mated it with a rendition of the Flying Eagle Cent reverse, also one of his recent creations. This design, coupled with a thinner, yet larger planchet, distinguishes the Type Two Gold Dollar from its Type One predecessor. Most examples of the former type are poorly produced. This shoddy workmanship meant that the coins acquired wear at an unacceptably fast rate. Since it proved unsatisfactory for general circulation, the Type Two design yielded to Longacre's Type Three motif after only a few years.
