1855 G$1 MS64 PCGS. A Choice Mint State example of this important type coin that was only produced from 1854 to 1856. In fact, the design changed during 1854, thus the early gold dollars of that year featured the earlier Liberty Head design. In 1856, the small Indian Head design was only coined in San Francisco, with other Mints coining the new large Indian Head design. Thus it was only in 1855 that all gold dollars featured the so-called Type Two design. Although they are not rare by comparison with other gold dollars, the design was not properly executed and they were subject to wear seemingly when they were first handled. Most coins could handle a brief period of actual circulation and still retain their Mint State appearance, but this was not true of the small Indian Head gold dollars. This piece is pleasing with frosty luster and lovely yellow-gold surfaces. Both sides have prominent clash marks and the reverse has noticeable peripheral die cracks.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
