1855 G$1 MS64 NGC. Satiny surfaces are combined with a strike that is far finer than seen on many Type Two gold dollars and make for a pleasing example of this rare issue. In fact, as the photos show, the feathers of the headdress are individually sharp in detail, and the central DOLLAR denomination is nicely outlined and each letter well formed. The coin is sheathed in light gold toning, beneath which the luster gleams softly. Only tiny abrasions keep this from an even higher grade. The reverse shows evidence of die clashing, while on the obverse the Indian's portrait is faintly outlined in clashed "shadows" of the reverse wreath. An excellent coin for a type set. While the original mintage was sizable, precious few have survived as fine as this piece. What a treat it would be to know where this piece was secreted and through whose hands it carefully passed since 1855.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
