1855 G$1 MS64 NGC. An inherent design flaw caused cons 1855[G$1] MS64 NGC.
1855<G$1> MS64 NGC. An inherent design flaw caused considerable weakness at the center of the reverse on most Type Two gold dollars. The deepest recess of the obverse die (the high point of the design) was the hair above Liberty's ear and eye, up to her forehead. Once the die pair was set up in the coinage press, this deep recess on the obverse was aligned opposite the digit 8 in the date and LL of DOLLAR. As a result, these features on the reverse were invariably weak or invisible. This example is, at least in part, an exception to the rule. The hair detail on the obverse is fairly well defined, and all of LIBERTY is clear. The date is complete, though the top loop of the 8 is a tad soft. All letters of DOLLAR are sharp, except that the first L reveals slight softness. Attractive peach-gold surfaces display radiant luster, and are very well preserved. A couple of light handling marks on Liberty's cheek and luster grazes in the left (facing) obverse field are mentioned for accuracy, as are an alloy spot in the left obverse field, and another in the right field. Prominent clash marks are visible on both sides. A rare opportunity for the serious gold specialist. NGC has certified only 48 pieces finer (11/05).
