1855<G$1> MS63 PCGS. There are only six issues in the Type Two Gold Dollar series: 1854, 1855, 1855-C, 1855-D, 1855-O, and 1856-S. The work of James Barton Longacre, this design proved exceptionally difficult to produce. As the coins left the Mint with poorly defined features, it is little wonder that most specimens wore down quickly in circulation. Like the 1854 Type Two, the 1855 is always in demand for Mint State type purposes. Both sides of this coin are fairly well struck with some softness of the 8 in the date. Rich reddish-gold patina dominates the outward appearance, but isolated areas of softer golden-rose color are intermingled on the obverse. The often-seen clashmarks are noted in the fields, but the surfaces are free of most sizeable abrasions. A pleasingly original specimen.
