1855-D G$1 AU55 NGC. Variety 7-I. The only Type Two gold dollar produced at the Dahlonega Mint, and one of the rarest of all gold dollars. As the skimpy mintage of 1,811 examples would imply, the issue is rare in all grades, and particularly elusive in Mint State or nearly so. Both services combined have certified less than a dozen examples (including resubmissions) in Mint State. Akers comments of this issue, "Most specimens have an extremely weak 8 in the date, and exhibit severe clash marks on both obverse and reverse. However, some specimens do have full dates, but they are extremely rare." This is one such piece, with all digits, including the 8, in the date bold. The generous strike has also fully brought up Liberty's hair. The inevitable clash marks are seen on each side, and most of the mint luster still remains. The lemon-yellow obverse deepens to yellow-gold with tinges of magenta on the reverse. Rare so fine, and an extremely attractive example of this rare D-mint gold dollar. Census: 6 in 55, 19 finer (11/06).
From The Twin Hollows Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
