1855-D G$1 AU50 NGC. Although three sets of dies were shipped to Dahlonega for the production of 1855-D gold dollars, only one set was actually used (Breen, 1988). In fact, they were barely used at all, considering the extremely low mintage of 1,811 pieces. Oddly, almost every example from this die pair exhibit heavy reverse clashing, indicating that the dies were damaged early in their service. In addition, the vast majority of 1855-D specimens show signs of weakness in the date, particularly on the 8. Breen astutely recognized in his Complete Encyclopedia that Longacre's design of the thinner planchet, yet higher relief, Type Two gold dollar did not take into account the inadequacies of the presses then in use, especially at the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mints. As a result, the Type Two gold dollar was quickly retired and replaced with the Type Three design in 1856. The coin in this lot is typical for the issue, and displays heavy clash marks, especially on the reverse, and a weak 8 in the date. The surfaces have an overlay of lilac patina and are pleasing, despite a few scattered abrasions that are consistent with the assigned grade. The 1855-D gold dollar is considered one of the rarest issues in the entire series (1849-1889), and especially so in higher grades. Experts agree that fewer than 100 coins exist in all grades, certified or otherwise. Census: 4 in 50, 33 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
