1855-D $2 1/2 --Cleaned--ANACS. AU55 Details. Winter-18
1855-D $2 1/2 --Cleaned--ANACS. AU55 Details. Variety-18-M. The surfaces show hairlines from cleaning primarily in the fields, with a few more on Liberty. Sharp on the stars and central devices, but weak on the right claws of the eagle and the dentils. For this date, the dentils are always poorly struck, the 1 is not very close to the bust while the left serif nearly touches the dentil. Some later die state examples show a thin die crack which connects the lower right side of the O to the lower left serif of F in OF, this die crack is present on this specimen.
Douglas Winter's Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint 1838-1861 states that in his opinion the 1855-D quarter eagle is not only the rarest Dahlonega quarter eagle but may well be the rarest coin struck at that Mint in terms of the total number of pieces that exist. The original mintage of 1,123 pieces were reduced by time and attrition to perhaps 50 or so. An important and rare coin that is seldom found in any grade.
