1855-D $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Winter 18-L. Production of D-mint Quarter Eagles continued to decline in 1855 to a diminutive mintage figure of just 1,123 pieces. The '55-D is considered by Southern gold experts to be the rarest, or least tied for that honor with the even lower mintage 1856-D as the most elusive Dahlonega issue of the denomination. In addition to the extremely low output, it is also one of the poorest produced D-mint Quarter Eagles. From an estimated surviving population of perhaps 30-35 coins, the vast majority are XF or less and any coin grading AU 55 or finer should receive consideration as a Condition Census piece. While somewhat deficient on the central devices, the denticles of this lustrous example have suffered the most from improper striking procedures, being grainy and indistinct. However, the coin's overall surface quality and eye appeal are clearly above-average for this extremely difficult issue. From the Ashland City Collection.
