1855 Charleston PORTER Slave Hire Badge. Number 291. A flat diamond-shaped tag with unclipped corners, 48mm x 43mm. Manufactured by local watchmaker William O'Connor. The elements on the front are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; an incuse "291" in individual punches; "PORTER" in a rectangular punch; and "1855" bar punched (final digit indistinct). The condition is about fine with a brown patina. The top has been clipped off down to the "Charleston" element and there is a tiny pin-sized hole between the "R" and "L".

1855 is a relatively scarce date. The city of Charleston had more badges manufactured (5,600) than were apparently sold (3834). This was the only year that William O'Connor had the contract to make the badges so to complete a "type" collection of all the different manufacturers, one would need to include an 1855 example.

Shipping: Small Collectibles (view shipping information)
