1855-C G$1 VF25 PCGS
1855-C G$1 VF25 PCGS. As is the case with most lower grade 1855-C gold dollars, this piece appears to be more worn on the obverse than on the reverse. There is little detail in the center of the obverse but the reverse has a sharp date and mintmark. The obverse has scattered areas of mint-made roughness but the reverse is more choice. As an identifier, there is a small planchet flaw that runs upward from the 1 in the denomination. A small amount of mint luster can be seen on the reverse; the obverse appears to have been lightly cleaned at one time. The color on both sides is light orange-gold and this piece has a decent overall appearance for the date and grade. Housed in an older PCGS holder, this coin appears conservatively graded by today's standards.
The 1855-C is the second rarest Charlotte gold dollar, both in terms of overall and high grade rarity. Of the 9,803 pieces struck, it is believed that a mere 100-125 examples are known today in all grades and the typical survivor only grades in the VF20 to XF40 range.
From the Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
