1855-C G$1 MS61 NGC. Winter 9-K, the only known dies. The 1855-C is the only Type Two Gold Dollar produced in the Charlotte Mint. A low mintage (9,803 pieces) date, the '55-C is the rarest C-mint Gold Dollar in high grades after only the 1849-C Open Wreath. In addition to a limited original delivery, the absence of both an 1854-C and an 1856-C Gold Dollar mintage explains why the 1855-C is so rare in Mint State. Most coins entered circulation and remained there, where the thin, poorly struck planchets wore down quickly and/or acquired distracting impairments. Whether the present example was intentionally preserved at the time of issue or escaped circulation purely by chance, it is one of the finest 1855-C Gold Dollars extant. Both sides exhibit green-gold color that lightens to yellow-gold shades as the coin turns into the light. Modest brightness is evident in the fields, this despite an overall scuffy appearance that probably explains the MS61 designation. The strike is typical for the date with softness of detail most readily evident in the centers. A newcomer to the Condition Census that is not pedigreed in Winter's book Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint: 1838-1861, this coin is identifiable by a series of small reverse planchet flaws (as struck) over the LL in DOLLAR, the 8 in the date, the right bow, and the knot in the bow. Clashmarks (also as produced, and not uncommon for a Type Two Gold Dollar) are also noted around the central reverse. A definite highlight of this important sale. From the Ashland City Collection.
