1855-C G$1 AU58 NGC. Unlisted Variety. In his reference Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint: 1838-1861 (1988), Douglas Winter states, "One die variety is known to exist." However, the present piece is from a different reverse die than his plate coin. The date is entered further right, with the second 5 beneath the right half of the A in DOLLAR. This is the preferable reverse die, since DOLLAR and 1855 are well struck compared to examples of Variety 9-K. The 1855-C is essential to a Charlotte Mint type set, since it is the sole Type Two issue. Only 9,803 pieces were struck, and demand for survivors is formidable. This bold and partly lustrous straw-gold representative displays mint-made clash marks and minor strike-throughs, but post-strike distractions are trivial. Census: 41 in 58, 13 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
