1855-C<G$1> AU55 PCGS. New Variety. Although Doug Winter's reference only discusses a single variety for this date, there are actually two different reverse dies identified from the small 9,803 coin mintage. This example is from the new reverse and not the one illustrated in Winter's book. The final date digit is almost entirely below the right base of the letter A above. The other variety has this digit further to the left and almost exactly centered below the letter A. After conducting a brief, informal survey of past auction records, it appears that this new variety is actually more common. The last 25 appearances of an 1855-C gold dollar in Heritage auctions reveals that 20 of those offerings were examples of this new variety, and only five were Winter's variety 9-K. This example has pleasing honey and light yellow-gold color with faint blue tones on the devices. The surfaces have the usual abrasions that are typical of most or all examples of this date. Prominent clash marks are visible on the obverse, with faint clash marks on the reverse.
