1855-C G$1 AU55 NGC. Variety 9-K. Only 9,803 pieces were struck of the 1855-C gold dollar, and of that small number it is estimated that today a mere 100-110 examples are known in all grades. This piece is far above average for the issue in terms of overall preservation; however, it does show the usual planchet problems and heavy die clashing seen on most survivors. Notably, a planchet lamination is located in the upper left obverse field below AT, and there is planchet granularity through CA. The reverse is unusually well defined, while the obverse has the usual softness of strike this issue is known for. Lovely reddish patina is seen over each side.

Coin Engraver: James B.
