<B>1855-C $5 Liberty Half Eagle--Reverse Die Break--MS61 NGC.</B></I> Variety 23-I. In spite of a substantial mintage of 39,789 pieces, the 1855-C is seldom located in AU or Uncirculated grades. While this piece is labeled as a mint error, it is actually from the terminal state of the dies. A rim-to-rim die break formed and the curved break finally fell away from the die, leaving the blobby die cud seen on this piece. Such pieces are rare. Winter stated he had seen at least two such coins.
