1855-C $5 MS61 NGC. Winter 23-J. While the 1855-C is one of the easier Charlotte Half Eagles to obtain in lower grades with some 140-150 pieces known, it is very elusive at the Uncirculated level. This lovely MS61 is a lower Condition Census item according to the C.C. as set out in Winter's 2001 reference on this series. Each side is sharply defined and exhibits bright golden-orange coloration. The fields show a bit of the semi-reflective finish that is often seen on Charlotte gold coins. This particular coin is housed in an NGC holder and labeled as a mint error with the notation that there is a reverse rim break. This rim break, or cud, is quite long covering the area from 2:30 to 3:30 on the reverse rim. However, we do not consider this to be an error as such, merely a coin from the terminal die state. On page 191 of Winter's reference, he mentions this also by stating, "I have seen at least two 1855-C half eagles which had a cud on the reverse. This is located at approximately 4:00 to 6:00." Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
