<B>1855-C $5 MS60 NGC.</B></I> Variety 23-J. A smooth and pleasing Mint State representative of this popular Southern gold issue. The centers are uncommonly sharp for a Charlotte Mint half eagle, although the hair above the coronet and the eagle's right (facing) claw exhibit some blending of detail. A few pinpoint planchet imperfections on the right fields are uneffaced by the strike. A minor obverse rim mark at 9 o'clock and a solitary thin mark above the eagle's left (facing) wing will combine to identify any future auction appearances of this high grade example. Fewer than 40,000 pieces were struck, and only a handful remain in Uncirculated grades.
