<B>1855-C $5 --Altered Surface--NCS. AU Details.</B></I> Variety 23-J. This is a saltwater coin with the sharpness of an Uncirculated piece. When PCGS and NGC first started grading, they would sometimes encapsulate saltwater Uncirculated branch mint gold coins with a net grade (a coin like the present one might have received an AU50 grade) but both services appear to no longer encapsulate these pieces. This is among the better saltwater Charlotte half eagles we have seen and we would not be surprised if it brought a price commensurate with a problem-free XF example.
