1855-C $5 AU55 NGC. Winter 23-J, the only known dies. In high grades (AU-Mint State), the 1855-C is similar in rarity to the 1854-C. The former issue was produced to the extent of 39,789 pieces, most survivors of which grade no finer than Extremely Fine with extensive circulation marks. Conversely, this coin is lightly worn with suitably bold definition remaining despite a strike that is a little soft over the upper and lower reverse eagle and some of the obverse highpoints. Golden-rose color blankets surfaces that are expectantly abraded for the issue. Doug Winter (Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint: 1838-1861) estimates that no more than 150 1855-C Half Eagles are extant in all grades. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
