1855-C<$5> AU53 NGC. Variety 23-J, the only known dies. Both sides have brilliant yellow-gold color with considerable luster. Design weakness is noted at the typical locations, along the hairline on the obverse and near the claws on the reverse. The surfaces are lightly abraded. Total mintage for the issue was 39,788 coins, with about 150 of those remaining in existence today. At the time this coin was struck, five different Mints were operating around the country. The San Francisco Mint had only recently opened, and was now in its first full year of production. The various Mints were essentially regional operations, with Dahlonega and Charlotte producing coinage from gold found in that area, San Francisco responsible for most of the Western gold and silver, New Orleans for South American imports, and Philadelphia for everything else.
