1855-C $5 AU50 PCGS
1855-C $5 AU50 PCGS. This is an extremely well struck example with virtual full detail on both the obverse and reverse. The surfaces are clean with just a few marks visible below attractive deep, old orange-gold color. There are extensive splashes of copper-orange in the obverse fields while the reverse is a more even green-gold with some orange overtones. The luster is frosty and extensive although much of it is not readily visible because of the depth of the aforementioned original color. The originality of this coin will not be seen as appealing by everyone because of the splotchiness noted on the obverse, but the connoisseur of Charlotte half eagles should give this piece serious consideration as not many 1856-C half eagles remain with natural hues. Housed in an old PCGS holder and conservatively graded by today's standards.
The 1855-C was lumped together with the 1854-C and 1856-C for many years but it is definitely a more common issue. An estimated 200 or so pieces are known with more than half of these in the VF-XF range. Three dozen or so properly graded AU coins are also known and this issue becomes scarce in AU55 to AU58. In Uncirculated, the 1855-C is very rare with only six or seven pieces presently accounted for. The finest known is the Elrod coin which is graded MS65 by NGC; the second finest appears to be the Milas-Garrett coin which is graded MS64 by NGC.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
