1855-C<$2 1/2> XF45 PCGS. Variety 16-I. This is an important low-mintage issue, with a total production of just 3,677 coins. During the 1850s, Charlotte and Dahlonega Mint gold coinage production was reduced to very small quantities. Both of these facilities were authorized by Congress in 1835, and began production in 1838. Their purpose was to provide a local coinage facility for the gold mining operations in the Southeast. In the early 1850s, production of gold in this region dropped off, as miners made their way to California, and then to Colorado and other western gold mining regions. Most of this gold was shipped to Philadelphia or New Orleans for coinage until the San Francisco Mint began operation. Except for a few local gold producers, the Mints at Charlotte and Dahlonega were largely idle. Lovely orange-gold color with essentially problem-free surfaces that exhibit only the usual minor handling or circulation marks on each side.
From The Carolina Gold Collection.
