1855-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 16-I. A single die variety is known. The 1855-CC is the lowest mintage (3,677 pieces) of any Charlotte Mint quarter eagle aside from the 1843-C Small Date. It is scarce in all grades through About Uncirculated, and rare in Mint State. NGC and PCGS have certified 17 examples in Uncirculated grades, some of which likely represent resubmissions. Moreover, in his Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint, Douglas Winter contends: "This is probably the worst struck Charlotte quarter eagle produced during the 1850's."
The MS62 coin offered in this lot does display minor weakness in six or seven of the star centers, and on the eagle's legs, areas usually poorly struck. The remaining design elements are quite sharp, however, including the hair around Liberty's forehead and ear, areas that are typically incomplete. Peach-gold surfaces exhibit soft luster, and possess inoffensive handling marks under magnification.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
