1855-C $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Winter 16-I. The elusive 1855-C Quarter Eagle is tied for first in overall rarity among Charlotte issues. Its mintage figure of 3,677 pieces is second lowest in the series among C-mints behind only the 1843-C Small Date, and it has also gained the reputation as being one of the worst produced issues from the Charlotte Mint. Taking this into consideration, the example offered here exhibits a perfectly acceptable strike although obviously blunt on the obverse stars and eagle's plumage. Soft, frosty luster is undisturbed beneath a uniform coating of reddish patina and only the presence of several mint-caused "chips" on each side is overtly suggestive of sloppy production. Easily a Condition Census example and one of the finest '55-Cs we have ever seen or offered. Population: 2 in 61, 1 finer (10/02). From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
