1855-C $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Variety 16-I. Fifty or so exa
1855-C<$2 1/2> AU58 PCGS. Variety 16-I. Fifty or so examples of the 1855-C quarter eagle, with a mintage of 3,677 pieces, are thought to exist today. Of these, most are in the VF-XF grade range. In fact, the average numerical grade of the 54 specimens currently certified at PCGS is just 49. High-end AU examples, such as the present AU58 coin, appear infrequently. Our records indicate that only six such specimens have been sold at public sales over the last 20 or so years.
This coin displays bright, lustrous orange-gold surfaces with hints of lime-green. Liberty is well defined, although most of the star centers, the eagle's leg feathers and left talons, and the arrow feathers are weakly struck, as is usual on this issue. A few minute, undistracting marks are scattered about. The overall eye appeal is superb. Population: 7 in 58, 4 finer (7/06).
