1855 $50 Wass Molitor Fifty Dollar--Damaged, Tooled--NCS. VF Details. K-9, R.5. Wass and Molitor were among the most respected issuers of territorial gold coins. Both were Hungarian miners who had been exiled by the Austrian government. The partnership of these two men represents how successful partners and mergers work. Each brought complementary talents to their company. According to Donald Kagin: "Wass's knowledge of mining, chemistry, and mineralogy combined with Molitor's ability at assaying, smelting, and refining created one of the finest assaying firms in California." He goes on to explain, "One of the drawing cards of this firm was that they paid off their depositors in 48 hours instead of the eight days usually required by the United States Assay Office."
Few survivors remain of this successful California private minter. This particular piece has seen extensive use in the channels of commerce. Each side is also peppered with numerous small abrasions, and the lower obverse rim appears to have been worked on. Even wear, except for the word DOLLARS on the reverse, which is weaker than the other design elements.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
