1855 $50 Wass Molitor Fifty Dollar AU55 NGC. K-9, R.5. These massive gold pieces were coined late in the California Gold Rush era, when the only other producers were Kellogg & Co. and the San Francisco Mint. All of the other firms that had produced private gold coinage in California had discontinued operations for one reason or another. Most simply halted production while some closed up shop entirely when their operators moved back East or elsewhere. Augustus Humbert left the U.S. Assay Office to join J.G. Kellogg once the Assay Office became the U.S. Mint. Meanwhile, Wass, Molitor remained in business and produced a limited coinage of gold in 1855 upon request of local merchants.
Throughout the private gold manufacturing era in California, only three entities produced the large fifty dollar gold pieces. Augustus Humbert and the U.S. Assay Office produced eight-sided pieces in 1851 and 1852, technically called ingots. Then in 1855, Wass, Molitor and Kellogg & Co. each produced round fifty dollar gold pieces, although the Kellogg examples were only coined in proof. Since the U.S. Assay Office was an official branch of the government, only these Wass, Molitor coins are collectible examples of private fifty dollar gold coins.
This example has bright green-gold color with somewhat reflective surfaces, probably the result of light cleaning over the years. It also has a few tiny rim bumps on each side that are typical for coins of this size. It is an exceptional example, overall, with good eye appeal.
