1855<3CS> PR66 PCGS. A beautifully preserved specimen that was struck from the same pair of dies used to produce most of the 139,000 business strikes from this year. The final three digits of the date are double punched, bold evidence of which can be seen under a loupe. The surfaces exhibit a subtle degree of glassy brilliance under mottled mottle gunmetal, apricot, and steel-blue patina. When viewed at a slight angle the coin's reflectivity is unmistakable. Produced before the Mint began widespread sales of proofs to collectors, the 1855 is a rare issue with no more than 30 pieces (Breen, 1977) believed extant. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (4/05).
From The Western Hills Collection.
