1855 3CS MS64 PCGS. In 1854, the silver three cent pie
1855 3CS MS64 PCGS. In 1854, the silver three cent piece design was altered slightly through the placement of three lines around the obverse star. David Bowers, in his 1988 Action Guide, says; "Of all three types of the silver three-cent denomination, the 1854-1858 style is the most difficult to locate. Few Uncirculated pieces were saved at the time of issue, so pieces in Mint State are quite rare today." This near-Gem specimen displays light silver-gray surfaces with pleasing luster. While the reverse star centers reveal the characteristic flatness of this issue, the remaining design elements exhibit much better-than-average definition. The points of the obverse star are sharp, and most of the ribbing in the reverse leaves is clear. A linear mark on the left border of the obverse central device precludes the Gem designation.
