1855 $3 MS64 PCGS. Nearly Gem quality, this brilliant three has frosty yellow luster with hints of pale orange toning. The plumes of the headdress and the ribbon bow at the bottom of the wreath are both weakly defined. Although the mintage of 50,555 coins is third highest in the entire series, examples seldom appear in the better Mint State grades. Dave Bowers writes that "enough 1855 threes survive that examples are available in just about any desired grade up through and including lower Mint State ranges. However, coin for coin the 1855 is much more elusive than the 1854. Choice coins MS63 or finer are rare, and only a few true Gems are known." Population: 18 in 64, 4 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
