1855 $3 MS64 PCGS. The 1855 is one of the more available of the early date Threes. However, when contrasted to a truly common date, such as the 1854, one immediately notes that the mintage of the 1855 is about one-third that of the 1854 and in Mint State it is at least two dozen times rarer. This, of course, is because the 1854 is a first year of issue and was saved as a memento of this unusual denomination. Nowhere near as many 1855s were set aside, and as a result high grade pieces such as this are infrequently encountered.
The surfaces of this near-Gem are intensely lustrous, and possess a greenish-gold coloration. The design elements are generally well impressed, save for the usual softness in some of the hair curls. There are a couple of stray marks here and there, but one comes away with an impression of overpowering luster and originality. Population: 17 in 64, 4 finer (6/07).
From The Carlton Woods Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
