1855 $3 MS64 NGC. A total of 50,555 three dollar circulation strikes were reportedly struck in 1855. David Bowers (The United States $3 Gold Pieces) says enough of this date survive so that examples are available in almost any desired grade through the lower Mint State ranges. Near-Gems and finer coins are rare, as evidenced by the census data below.
Potent luster radiates from yellow-gold surfaces imbued with hints of light tan, and an attentive strike sharpens the design elements. While a few minor luster grazes and marks preclude full Gem classification, none detract from the impressive eye appeal. Census: 22 in 64, 2 finer (2/08).

Coin Engraver: James B.
