1855<$3> MS63 PCGS. The 1855 is one of the more easily obtainable three dollar gold pieces in About Uncirculated and low Mint State grades. However, at the MS 63-65 levels, this issue is undeniably rare when viewed in the larger context of U.S. numismatics, but examples appear with more frequency than other early P-mint dates such as the 1856 and 1857. On the other hand, we suggest that specialists who desire the ultimate representation of either the three gold piece or, in particular, the 1855, enter solid bids when the present Gem crosses the auction block. The surfaces of this specimen are intensely lustrous with a thick coating of mint frost. The color is yellow-gold in shade with copper-golden hues in evidence at certain angles. Both sides are sharply struck and typically abrasion-free for the grade. Population: 44 in 63, 18 finer (4/06).
