1855 25C PR64 Cameo NGC. The 1855 is the second of only two P-mint No Motto Seated Quarters to display arrows at the date and no rays around the reverse eagle. By 1856, Mint Director Colonel James Ross Snowden apparently felt that the public had become well enough acquainted with the new light weight Quarters to render the continued use of a distinguishing feature unnecessary. While Mint State survivors from the 2.8 million-coin 1855-P delivery are scarce, they are nowhere near as elusive as the few remaining proofs. No more than 20 specimen strikings of the 1855 Arrows Seated Quarter are believed extant (per Breen, 1988) from an unknown, although presumably limited original mintage. The present near-Gem is the first example to receive a Cameo designation from either of the major grading services (10/02). Both sides present as untoned, although careful inspection reveals some pale steel-gray highlights within the lower obverse denticles. The fields are bright and noticeably mirrored, while the well contrasted devices display a satiny finish. There are a couple of wispy hairlines in the fields, but we cannot find a single blemish that is out of context with the assigned grade. Rollermarks (as produced) are seen on the obverse over the right periphery, below and around the date, and over the lower left periphery. They are also present on the reverse over the lower right. These features should easily trace the pedigree of this important specimen. Generally sharply struck save for a little bluntness of detail over some of the obverse star centrils.Ex: Pre-Long Beach Sale (Superior, 10/2000), lot 4362, where it realized $12,075. The coin was not designated as Cameo on the NGC insert at the time of that sale. From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
