1855 25C Arrows PR65 NGC. Ex: Pittman. We last offered this coin in our February 1999 Long Beach Sale, when it was described as follows: "The surfaces exhibit deep, watery reflectivity under a layer of reddish-gold and violet patina. Most of the obverse stars are a touch on the weak side, those on the right being noticeably flat, a characteristic found on other proofs of this date. There is a narrow depression from a piece of foreign matter on the die that runs under the eagle's right wingtip. Although Breen estimates twice as many 1855 proofs having survived as 1854s (20 pieces), our experience shows this proof issue to be at least as rare, if not rarer." This description remains accurate today, including the comment about this piece's relative rarity. In the years since, we have had the privilege to offer only two other examples of this date in proof format, the last in 2001, and neither of which graded as high as the present Gem. This is an opportunity for a collector to acquire a coin that is both rare and underrated, with an impressive pedigree, as well as one of the finest known of its date. Census: 2 in 65, 1 finer (11/06).
Ex: George Earle Sale (Henry Chapman, 6/25/1912), lot 3102; Wayte Raymond Sale (2/18/1947), lot 408, where it was purchased by John Jay Pittman for $24.50; Pittman II (Akers, 5/1998), lot 1330, where it brought $15,400; 1999 February Long Beach Auction (Heritage, 2/99), lot 5916, where it realized $16,500.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
