1855 $20 Wass Molitor Twenty Dollar, Small Head, AU50 Cleaned Uncertified. K-7, R.6. The coin was harshly cleaned at one time, leaving the surfaces with a somewhat unnaturally bright appearance. It may have been mounted as a piece of jewelry, as evidenced by the spaced rim dings on the obverse. Weakly struck on much of the eagle (as always according to the Kagin reference), there are scattered small abrasions on each side. Wass, Molitor & Co. briefly struck gold double eagles for part of 1855, in order to help alleviate the local shortage of circulating coinage. There were two varieties of their 1855 twenty dollar pieces, the Small Head (as seen here) and the Large Head. Listed on page 362 of the 2008 Guide Book.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
