1855 $20 Wass Molitor Twenty Dollar, Small Head--Rim Filed, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. K-7, High R.5. The obverse of this piece is well-struck while the reverse lacks detail, similar to most of the few known examples. Only 30 to 40 of these coins are believed to exist today, although the actual population may be even smaller. Attractive green-gold surfaces with traces of luster despite light cleaning. Both sides are lightly abraded, with numerous additional small marks that are almost certainly flaws in the original planchet. The pressure used to strike these pieces was not sufficient to bring up all of the central design details, thus was also not sufficient to eliminate the original planchet marks. The Wass-Molitor and Kellogg firms were the final two private gold producing firms in operations after the San Francisco Mint opened in 1854. Listed on page 358 of the 2007 Guide Book.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
