1855<$20> Kellogg & Co. Twenty Dollar AU58 PCGS. K-3, R.4. Long Arrows. This example is sharply struck with attractive light yellow surfaces and hints of orange color. The surfaces have frosty luster with only a trace of wear on the highpoints. Faint hairlines and minor blemishes are present, but not detrimental to the appearance of this splendid example. Although coined after the San Francisco Mint opened for business, the Kellogg issues were struck in substantial quantities, and remain plentiful to this day.
Since his arrival in San Francisco in October 1849, John Glover Kellogg had a long career as an assayer and coiner in California, continuing until 1866. Over these years, he partnered with various different individuals after leaving his position as cashier of the United States Assay Office. When the first Kellogg twenty dollar pieces were issued in 1854, he was a partner with G.F. Richter. After Richter left in April 1854, J. Hewston joined Kellogg, but perhaps his most famous partnership was with Augustus Humbert. The firm of Kellogg & Humbert was responsible for a substantial quantity of gold ingots, many which were discovered as part of the S.S. Central America treasure.
