1855<$20> Kellogg & Co. Twenty Dollar AU58 NGC. K-3a, R.6. This is a remarkable example of the final privately issued gold coin in California. After G.F. Richter left the firm and returned to the East in April 1854, Kellogg worked with various other partners until renewing his former acquaintance with Augustus Humbert, in the form of a new assaying firm known as Kellogg & Humbert. They joined together in April 1855, and continued in business until April 2, 1860, along the way becoming the most prolific issuer of gold bars in the state. They also issued these twenty-dollar gold coins, a continuation of the series that began in 1854. This near-Mint example is remarkable for its brilliant yellow-gold luster and frosty surfaces. A few faint abrasions are noted, but the overall eye appeal and importance of this piece is considerable.
