<B>1855 $20 AU55 NGC.</B></I> This Choice AU 1855 twenty is refreshingly original. Lustrous surfaces abound, especially on the reverse where the cartwheels are virtually uninterrupted. A few scattered marks are observed on the obverse, the largest being a 3-mm mark to the left of the date. The defect in the field to the left of star 12 appears to be a mint-produced strike-through. Garrett and Guth consider the 1855 double eagle to be a "true condition rarity," as stated in their <I>Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, </B></I>and add that "nearly all of the known coins for the date are low grade."
